چکیده

The synthesis and organization of functional nanostructures using self-assembly processes embodies a critical challenge for nanoand meso-science, as twoand three-dimensional (2D and 3D) spontaneous arrangement of nanoscale structural units or building blocks can produce ordered ensembles that exhibit collective functionality at reduced cost with greater efficiency [1,2]. Generating arrays of nanoparticles with 2D planar and 3D configurations is key to this challenge, and self-assembly techniques can play a key role if they can be directed to express specific patterned structures reliably and reproducibly.

Self– versus Directed– assembly of Nanoparticles via Pulsed Laser Induced Dewetting of Patterned Metal Films

A nanoscale, synthetic perturbation was all that was required to nudge a natural, self–assembly process toward significantly higher order. Nanolithography was used to impose the perturbation which ultimately led to an organized nanoparticle array. Specifically, liquid–phase pulsed laser induced dewetting (PLiD) was used to transform metallic thin film strips into nanoparticle arrays. Initially,...

On the breakup of patterned nanoscale copper rings into droplets via pulsed-laser-induced dewetting: competing liquid-phase instability and transport mechanisms.

Nanolithographically patterned copper rings were synthesized, and the self-assembly of the rings into ordered nanoparticle/nanodrop arrays was accomplished via nanosecond pulsed laser heating above the melt threshold. The resultant length scale was correlated to the transport and instability growths that occur during the liquid lifetime of the melted copper rings. For 13-nm-thick rings, a chang...

Nanoparticle assembly via the dewetting of patterned thin metal lines: understanding the instability mechanisms.

Nanosecond pulsed laser heating was used to control the assembly of spatially correlated nanoparticles from lithographically patterned pseudo-one-dimensional nickel lines. The evolution of the nickel line instabilities and nanoparticle formation with a correlated size and spacing was observed after a series of laser pulses. To understand the instabilities that direct the nanoparticle assembly, ...

Investigation of pulsed laser induced dewetting in nanoscopic metal films

Hydrodynamic pattern formation (PF) and dewetting resulting from pulsed laser induced melting of nanoscopic metal films have been used to create spatially ordered metal nanoparticle arrays with monomodal size distribution on SiO 2 /Si substrates. PF was investigated for film thickness h ≤ 7 nm < laser absorption depth ∼ 11 nm and different sets of laser parameters, including energy density E an...

In-situ characterization of nanoparticle beams focused with an aerodynamic lens by Laser-Induced Breakdown Detection

The Laser-Induced Breakdown Detection technique (LIBD) was adapted to achieve fast in-situ characterization of nanoparticle beams focused under vacuum by an aerodynamic lens. The method employs a tightly focused, 21 μm, scanning laser microprobe which generates a local plasma induced by the laser interaction with a single particle. A counting mode optical detection allows the achievement of 2D ...
